Why Protein Matters More Than You Think
Muscle: More Than Just for Lifting Stuff
Muscles aren’t just about looking toned or lifting heavy things—they’re actually one of your body’s best assets for staying strong, mobile, and burning energy. They help regulate your metabolism, support everyday movement, and play a huge role in your long-term health.
But here’s the catch: as we get older, we naturally start losing muscle. That’s why keeping your protein intake up isn’t just for gym-goers—it’s essential for anyone who wants to stay active, mobile, and independent as the years go on.
What Happens If You Don’t Eat Enough Protein?
When your body doesn’t get the protein it needs, it starts breaking down muscle to get it. Not ideal—especially if you’re trying to maintain your strength or build any. You can eat “enough” calories and still lose muscle if you’re not getting enough quality protein.
Protein = Metabolism’s Best Friend
Here’s something cool: your body actually burns more calories digesting protein than it does carbs or fats. That means eating protein can give your metabolism a bit of a boost—even when you’re not working out. But because your body doesn’t store protein like it does carbs or fat, you need to eat it regularly—ideally every 4–5 hours—to keep everything running smoothly.
How to Get More Protein Into Your Day
You don’t need to live off boiled chicken and protein powder. There are plenty of tasty ways to get more protein, whether you’re a meat-eater or plant-based:
• Lean meats like chicken, turkey, and lean beef are classic options.
• Fish and seafood come with a bonus: healthy omega-3s.
• Eggs are a powerhouse—quick, affordable, and full of essential amino acids.
• Dairy products like yogurt, cheese, and milk can help boost protein (and calcium).
• Plant-based proteins like beans, tofu, lentils, quinoa, and nuts are great for vegetarians and vegans.
• Protein shakes or powders can be a handy backup if you’re busy or just not that hungry.
